Consulting

I started this consulting service because I became very frustrated with the field and the lack of the support for starting a practice. It became very apparent that most people in the field did not welcome competitors. Most practices would prefer to hire physicians as employees and make money off of them. This situation generally perpetuates itself, as most physicians do not have the "know-how" to start their own IVF lab. This is further complicated by the fact that many may have some of the information on how to start a lab, but not the time, as they have to generate revenue seeing patients.

The other avenue open to RE's is to join one of the other two established fertility practice networks. The trend in this country has been towards consolidation in business. One can see this in health insurance. Probably 85% of the covered lives in this country are covered by United and Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I think the pendulum is going to shift back towards smaller companies that operate independently. In addition, many physicians are independent and like to practice medicine the way they want, without being told they have to use the same protocols that every other clinic in the network uses. Patients also like independent clinics, as they are generally more customer-service oriented.

In the end, I feel that it is important for our generation to assert its independence. There has been a gradual trend for Generation X and Generation Y to become employees of group practices, as well as large hospital systems. I think this works well for the first few years after practice, but it does have its drawbacks over the long term. Thus, I started this consulting company to help physicians get over the lack of information on starting a fertility practice. The only real hurdles now are money, time, and initiative.

We are not going to run your business. We are here to give you information and guidance on the big issues when starting a fertility practice. You will be responsible for choosing a location, building, and contractor. We can tell you what worked and did not work for us, but this will be your clinic.

We are here to give advice and opinion, as well as technical expertise. The fees for our services are very modest in the grand scheme of starting a center.

There are consulting companies that will come in and set up a practice for groups of 3 or more physicians. But, that generally comes with a marriage proposal. They usually end up owning a piece of your practice and they take their cut every month.

We feel that this should be your practice. You are going to put in the vast amount of work and should therefore keep your hard-earned money.
